General
Guidelines
Authors of articles to be published in the journals of
American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. (APPI) and the American Psychiatric
Association (APA) can deposit those articles in public access repositories
subject to the following conditions:
- The author’s version of the accepted manuscript
(post–peer review) can be deposited in any public or institutional
repository for public release no earlier than 12 months after publication
in the journal (online or in print, whichever occurs first).
- If the author selects APPI’s “immediate
public access” program (fee based), APPI will deposit in PubMed
Central on behalf of the author the official published version for release
immediately on publication in the journal (i.e., the 12-month embargo
is waived).
- APPI’s official published version (PDF or other
format; including copyediting, graphic design, and formatting) cannot
be deposited unless our fee-based “immediate public access”
program is selected by the author.
- APPI acknowledges the right of authors to deposit
their peer-reviewed accepted manuscript in public or institutional repositories
to be in compliance with National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other
funding agency mandates (see
below for NIH mandate details). APPI’s requirement of a 12-month
embargo before release can be waived if the author participates in APPI’s
“immediate public access” program (fee based).
- The journal’s copyright statement and complete
article source, including doi, must be included on the deposited article.
The article must link directly to the published version on the journal’s
website at journals.psychiatryonline.org
with the phrase: “The official published article is available
online at <insert full URL for article>.”
- The right to deposit does not extend to material
(e.g., figures and tables) included in the article with permission from
another copyright holder.
- All uses of the repository version must be noncommercial.
- These policies apply to articles published in APPI/APA
journals only; books published by APPI and the APA, including DSM-IV-TR,
are not covered by these policies.
Public availability of a manuscript in “preprint”
or working paper form in advance of peer review and acceptance for publication
would not necessarily preclude publication in an APPI/APA journal. Such
manuscripts may still be considered for publication if they represent
original work, have not been previously published in another journal or
book, and are not being considered for publication elsewhere.
NIH-Funded
Research
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revised Policy
on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded
Research (Public Access Policy), which took effect on April 7, 2008, requires
all investigators funded by the NIH to submit or have submitted for them
their final peer-reviewed manuscript upon acceptance for publication to
the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) PubMed
Central (PMC) to be made publicly available no later than 12 months
after the official date of publication. APPI/APA journals acknowledge
that the Author retains the right to provide a copy of the author’s
final version of the manuscript to the NIH upon acceptance for publication
(i.e., after all modifications from the peer review process but before
copyediting, graphic design, formatting, and production work performed
to produce the final published article) for public release no earlier
than 12 months after publication in the journal (online or in print, whichever
occurs first).
If the author selects APPI’s “immediate public
access” program (fee based), APPI will deposit in PubMed Central
on behalf of the author the official published version (PDF or other format;
including copyediting, graphic design, and formatting) for release immediately
on publication in the journal (i.e., the 12-month embargo is waived).
Unless the author decides to participate in APPI’s
fee-based “immediate public access” program, APPI/APA journals
do not deposit manuscripts on behalf of authors. The NIH has developed
a password-protected, web-based NIH
Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system to help authors comply with the
NIH Public Access Policy.
